Employees at SKF Denmark are testing an advanced translating program.
SKF Nordic, which is a part of the international group SKF with more than 38,000 employees, handling production and sales of outputs for rotating machinery. The key products are the solid bearings and proofing which have made the name SKF world known throughout the years.
With a large international group behind the company and with customers all over Scandinavia, it is extremely important to have very efficient communications tools available. One of the newest tools is the Life Translator one of the worlds most intelligent translating programs, which is being tested and evaluated by two employees of the company. In a few seconds it translates all from Internet pages, sales documents, offers, technical drawings and all other correspondence papers. One of the test persons is Erik W. Petersen, Application Engineer in the company's technical department.
Erik W. Petersen concludes the following on the background from testing the program for some months:
Of course the texts are not 100% correct, as it is not humans doing the translations. However it is of great help during the day to day work that you can have within a few seconds an overview in general of the texts context – and then later on let our translators fulfill a more deep translation. It saves a lot of time and work having in mind that the program remembers more sentences, which is standard to us such as technical expressions and phrases. The more words we add to the program the better it becomes. Therefore we can conclude that we as the users are moving along in the progress of developing the program and therefore also the future quality level.
Life Translator in the test has been used primarily to translate from English into Danish and mainly correspondence. The experiences with the program have made an influence on the marketing department so that they also are testing the program and the way to use the translation program.
